Rijksmuseum
Pay a visit to one of Amsterdam’s biggest museums and browse works by the nation’s most celebrated artists. After a major ten year renovation, which was completed in 2013, the new look Rijksmuseum is now open to the public, and waiting to be explored.
As you walk through the beautiful building with its grand interior, you’ll see collections of Dutch paintings from across the centuries spread across four floors. Arranged in a chronological circuit, you’ll step through 800 years of history as you go from exhibition to exhibition, with artwork by creative talents including Van Gogh, Van Dyck and Steen.
Make sure you spend time looking at the collections of antiques, photographs and drawings, and don’t miss the museum’s most famous works, Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. To find out more about the art on display, it’s worth taking a group tour where a knowledgeable guide will tell you all about the masterpieces, making sure you get the most from your visit. The tours are themed around specific collections, including Highlights from the Golden Age, the Drawing Tour and Highlights of the Rijksmuseum, giving you a more intimate, specialist experience. There’s even a tour designed especially for families.
The Rijksmuseum is one of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions, so to avoid the queues it’s worth visiting during the week and either early in the morning or after 3pm. The museum’s open every day from 9am to 5pm, and has an onsite cafe with food and refreshments to keep you energised throughout your visit.
